Presbyopia
From age 40 onwards people usually begin to experience changes in their vision. Blurred vision at near points, such as when reading or sewing is called presbyopia and happens to everyone at some point, even those who have never worn glasses before. When you start to hold your book or newspaper further away or experience eyestrain when reading, don’t panic, just come to us for an eye examination to determine which glasses will be right for you.
If you need eyewear but don’t know what type will be best for you, here are some options:
Reading Glasses
Reading glasses are typically worn only when doing close work, such as reading a book or magazine. So if you are struggling with the small print on your newspaper, prescription reading glasses will sharpen up the words for you.
Bifocals
If you need two different prescriptions, one for distance vision and one for close vision, then bifocals provide both prescriptions in the same lens. This means that you don’t have to change between two pairs of glasses.
Varifocals
Varifocals are similar to bifocals, but they offer a more gradual transition from your distance prescription to your near vision one, with no visible line between them on the lenses.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are always an option when glasses aren’t convenient. Whether it’s for sport or leisure our comfortable contact lenses give you more options and you can even have them with varifocal prescriptions.
Eye Health
People over the age of 40 are in a higher risk group of developing glaucoma especially if there is a positive family history, e.g. mother, father, brother, sister.(see eye care page)
